Administration Reveals Federal Employee Layoffs as Funding Gap Nears Third Week

Administration officials confirmed the initiation of government employee layoffs on Friday, following through on prior threats linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s process for terminating staff.

While Vought did not specify which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been distributed within that agency. Additionally, a DHS representative indicated that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to contest the actions in court.

This is shameful that the government has used the government shutdown as an pretext to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver critical services to the public across the country,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to support a Republican-backed legislation to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is not expected to be resolved soon.

A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s impact on government workers.

This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in Congress and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government open and operational,” Stier said. “Our flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not at fault for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
